Independent Custody Visitors - Opportunities in Greenwich
Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) are ordinary members of the local community appointed to make sure that people detained in police stations are treated correctly. They call at police stations unannounced and write short reports about their visit. Their recommendations can require the police to make improvements for the welfare of detainees and they play a valuable role in maintaining public confidence in this important area of policing. They volunteer to work as part of a local panel and help the MPA, which oversees custody visiting in London, to make sure that detainees are treated well.
To become an ICV, applicants need to 18 years old and must live, work or study in the area they want to volunteer in. They need to attend a short interview and pass through a vetting process. This is so that they can be given a pass allowing instant access to police custody suites.
